Concussion & TBI (traumatic brain injuries)

Acupuncture treatment for TBI and concussions has been shown to promote neurological protective mechanisms such as 'Brain-derived neurotrophic factor' making it a good adjunctive treatment for short and long term care.

Are you struggling since experiencing a concussion or TBI? Depending on the part of the brain that has been impacted, a host of symptoms may be making your daily life challenging. It is well reported that changes in mood, sleep, concentration, energy levels, vision and memory can all be the result of a TBI or concussion.

Acupuncture is suitable for concussion and TBI care, as the very nature of acupuncture is to send signals to the brain via the nervous system. This ability to stimulate specific brain regions has been demonstrated many time through fMRI research. Please explore the links at the bottom of the page for up to date research in this area.

The team at Newtown Acupuncture have undertaken studies in Electrical Acupuncture techniques specific to the treatment of TBI and concussion. The nervous system responds to specific electrical signals that are tightly controlled via our quality electroacupuncture machines. The gentle electrical signal is clipped to the inserted needle, then carried up through the nervous system to stimulate specific neuropeptides or brain structures.

GOALS OF ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT

The promote the bodies natural brain protecting chemistry, including 'Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)' and other neuropeptides that help to heal the brain injury.

Support the gut-brain axis as TBI can disrupt the functional and anatomical integrity of the digestive system, which then causes gut microbiome imbalances. Research is finding that the gut microbiome can influence brain health.

Support mood disorder like anxiety or depression that may be triggered by TBI or concussion

Support sleep and symptoms such as headaches
